In 2014, the Court of First Instance of the Loiret, the France Republic sentenced Mrs. Jacqueline Sauvage to ten years imprisonment for intentionally killing her husband by shooting him 3 times at his back, claiming that her husband beat, abused and raped her over a period of 47 years. When the detail of the case and the judgment was disclosed, a large number of French people expressed their disagreement of the verdict. The issue of domestic violence, marital rape and the women's rights were raised. The legal defense principle in Criminal Code of France was criticized of its fairness in this case. The question is 'Does Mrs. Sauvage deserve to be sentenced to ten years imprisonment for her self-defense action?' or Is it time for the aforesaid principle in French law to be reviewed?
